This or that tag

I am making my own tag! I came up with an idea for a ‘This or That’ tag, and I thought it would be really cool. Let’s goooo:

The Rules

  1. Link back to this post (the original post)
  2. Link back to the post of whoever nominated you
  3. Underline and/or bold your choice of each of the ‘This or That’ choices
  4. Nominate 2 bloggers that are new or under 50 followers
  5. Nominate anyone else you want to
  6. Make 1 ‘This or That’ choice for them to include in their post

City or Country

Pancakes or Waffles

Summer or Winter

Pink or Blue

Heels or Flats

Day or Night

Swimming or Skiing

Elvis or Michael Jackson (just)

Aeroplane or Boat

Chocolate or Vanilla (neither really – but chocolate by itself is nice)

Sneakers or Sandals

Board games or Video games

Reading or Writing (very close)

Morning or Evening (neither, I’m always tired at both these times)

Cats or Dogs

Batman or Superman

Netflix or Youtube

Soft music or Loud music

One pillow or Lots of pillows

Europe or America

To do this tag I nominate

and Gee as my nominated blogs under 50 followers

I also nominate

and anyone reading this post who wants to do it. I’d love it if you could do my tag.

Okay, this has nothing to do with the post but I have an announcemeeent. If/when my blog gets to 100 followers (including email followers), I will host a q and a and release a *secret* project I’ve been working on. I am really excited to release it, so can you guys all help me to get to 100 followers. I know it is a big jump, but I am sure we can do it.

Popular brand aesthetics

Boom ba da doom da doo – popular brand aestheticssss. I just thought this would be a cool post and an original idea (is it original?). So here we gooo:

I love those shoes. Also, the snake isn’t *really* Gucci, but it fitted the aesthetic so *shrugs*.

Supreme aesthetics.jpg

Again, I actually love those shoesss. Also, does the Supreme logo remind anyone of the Colgate logo?

Adidas aesthetics.jpg

That hoodie is cuuuuute!

Gap aesthetics.jpg

I imagined this so much better than it turned out. But I love love love that sweater.

Nike aesthetics.jpg

It was so hard to not just fill the Nike aesthetic with lots and lots of shoes.

These were so fun to make (until Canva decided to play up). Tell me in the comments which one is your favourite, and what brands I should do if I do this again.

My extensive TBR list

Image result for pile of books gif

My TBR (To Be Read) list is so so so so so long. I bought heaps of books from a massive second-hand book sale that sold books for around 1 to 2 dollars, so I have a lot of books that I own but haven’t read yet. Let’s get into it:

BZRK Reloaded by Michael Grant

I bought this book with my birthday money but couldn’t remember if I bought BZRK or BZRK Reloaded when I saw it at the book sale. I bought it anyway, so now I have two of it.

The Trials of Apollo – The Hidden Oracle by Rick Riordan

This was another book I purchased with my birthday money, as I love Percy Jackson and Heroes Olympus, so I thought I’d try The Trials of Apollo series.

The Trials of Apollo – The Dark Prophecy by Rick Riordan

See The Trials of Apollo – The Hidden Oracle.

Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan

I got this book for Christmas, and I can’t wait to start it. I honestly can’t believe that I haven’t read it yet!

Magnus Chase and the Hammer of Thor by Rick Riordan

See Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer

Pathfinder by Orson Scott Card

I bought Pathfinder at the book sale for 2 dollars, even though it is 662 pages long – bargain. This book sounds really interesting (by reading the blurb), and I’m excited to read it.

(And it has a video trailer:)

The Spook’s Apprentice and The Spook’s Curse by Joseph Delaney

These books are together in one book titled ‘The Seventh Son’. I got them for free from my teacher at primary school.

Skulduggery Pleasant – The Dying of the Light by Derek Landy

This is another book that I bought from the book sale. Although, because it is the seventh book in the series, I need to read the other books in the series before I read it.

Lockwood and Co. – The Hollow Boy by Jonathan Stroud Image result for pile of books gif

I love love love Lockwood and Co. I bought The Hollow Boy with my birthday money but I still haven’t got around to reading it.

Ruby Redford – Feel the fear by Lauren Child

Ruby Redford has been recommended to me by so many of my friends, so when I saw it at the book sale, I just had to buy it.

The Obsidian Mirror by Catherine Fisher

This was another book that I bought at the book sale. It is a mystery that includes the supernatural so you can hardly tell me to pass (well, you can but I probably won’t listen).

Silverfin by Charlie Higson

It’s a James Bond book about when he was young. I saw it at the book sale and bought it straight away.

Picture Me Gone by Meg Rosoff

I bought Picture Me Gone from the used book stall at the public Library. It cost about 50 cents, so naturally, I purchased it.

Nyxia by Scott Reintgen

I actually won this book from a holiday reading program. Read say 5 books and get a free book. I got four books, and Nyxia is one of them.

The Maze Runner (Series) by James Dashner

I was given the Maze Runner series for my birthday and I still haven’t read it. It has rave reviews about it, and I’m eager to try it.

From the Cutting Room of Barney Kettle by Kate De Goldi

See Nyxia

Image result for flicking through book gif

Nightmares – The Lost Lullaby by Jason Segel and Kirsten Miller

See From the Cutting Room of Barney Kettle

MetaWars – Fight for the Future by Jeff Norton

Yet another book I purchased from the book sale.

MetaWars – The Dead are Rising by Jeff Norton

See MetaWars – Fight for the Future

The Young Chieftain by Ken Howard

I have had this book for years but have somehow never read it. I really need to get around to doing so.

Spirit Animals – Tales of the Fallen Beasts by Brandon Mull

I don’t know about you, but does the term ‘spirit animals’ remind you of the His Dark Materials series by Philip Pullman?

Birthmarked by Caragh O’Brien

I also got this book from the book sale, and it sounds really good. I did my first First Lines Friday on Birthmarked, you can check it out here.

Prized by Caragh O’Brien

Again, from the book sale. Prized is the sequel to Birthmarked, and they both sound really good.

So that was my extensive TBR list (currently). But, we do have a few really big piles of books sitting in the kitchen, so when we go through those, I may have a couple more books to read.

P.S Comment ‘dictionaries never get old’ if you read this

Once back in the day *starts talking like your great-grandmother* Elm did the TMI tag and said that anybody who read her post should do it. So, that is exactly what I’m doing.

The TMI tag consists of 50 questions, which I will attempt to answer:

1: What are you wearing?
Black track pants and a purple Canterbury jersey.

2: Ever been in love?
With myself? Yes.

3: Ever had a terrible breakup?
Nope 😃

4: How tall are you?
162 centimetres (or at least that’s what Mum says)

5: How much do you weigh?
Bang on 45 kilograms

6: Any tattoos?

7: Any piercings?
Kinda, I had one in each ear but I have sensitive ears so they were really infected and I let them close up. Now, they are just little scars.

8: OTP?
I actually had to look this up to see what it meant – for anyone that’s wondering, it means One True Pairing. Anyway, it’s totally Lockwood and Lucy from Lockwood and Co.

9: Favourite Show?
Either Stranger Things or Riverdale.

10: Favourite bands?
Panic! At The Disco, Hey Violet, or 21 Pilots to name a few.

11: Something you miss?
Having little to no homework at primary school (mostly none).

12: Favourite song?
Copycat by Billie Eilish

13: How old are you?
13 (but it does tend to change annually)

14: Zodiac sign?
Aries and I love it. Look up Aries traits and you will find a few of the key components of my character.

15: Quality you look for in a partner?
*Heh-heh – let’s twist this question* Like when you have to pair up for group projects? I’d look for someone who actually does their fair share of work rather than slacking off and making me stress about the stupid project.

16: Favourite Quote?
‘The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched – they must be felt with the heart.’ – Helen Keller

17: Favorite actor?
Madelaine Petsch

Image result for madelaine petsch gif eye roll

18: Favourite colour?
I love mustard yellow but also a rusty, vintage red.

19: Loud music or soft?
Mostly loud but soft works for me too sometimes.

20: Where do you go when you’re sad?
My bed.

21: How long does it take you to shower?
Almost literally a couple of days.

22: How long does it take you to get ready in the morning?
40 minutes? That’s normally how long I have to get ready for school in the morning – but I do only just make it out the door in time to be picked up for the bus.

23: Ever been in a physical fight?
*Scoffs* no

24: Turn on?
*Heh-heh – let’s twist this one too* A light switch.

Image result for light switch gif

25: Turn off?
See 24

26: The reason I joined WordPress?
I created my first blog because my friend Emily showed me her blog, and I was into writing at that time so thought I would try making my own. I ended up discontinuing my first blog after a month because it drained me as I was forcing myself to post daily. This year I decided to try again, and this blog has been pretty successful so far.

27: Fears?
Being trapped.

28: Last thing that made you cry?
When I was really tired.

29: Last time you said you loved someone?
About an hour ago to Mum.

30: Meaning behind your Blog Name?
I am currently in the process of making a new name for my blog; Simplistic Internet Spasm just isn’t relevant. It is at the URL hannahkmaria.wo- but I don’t really think I’m satisfied with that. Give me some name ideas in the comments.

31: Last book you read?
Fear by Michael Grant

32: The book you’re currently reading?
Light by Michael Grant

33: Last show you watched?
American Pickers

34: Last person you talked to?
My sister, telling her how to spell ‘Idle Crafting’ (I think it’s a game).

35: The relationship between you and the person you last texted?
I’ve grown up with her and she’s almost my sister ( but we’re not related at all by blood).

36: Favourite food?
Probably butter chicken. Or stirfry.

37: Place you want to visit?
Austria. I’ve been there once before on a tour around Europe, but it was very brief and I’d love to go on a longer holiday there.

38: Last place you were?
Um, the lounge? What does this question mean?

39: Do you have a crush?

40: Last time you kissed someone?

41: Last time you were insulted?
I actually have no idea

42: Favourite flavour of sweet?
What sweet are we talking about? Like lollies or candy? I love lemon lollies, but strawberry fruit bursts are amazing, there are so many different sorts I don’t even know.

43: What instruments do you play?
Guitar, but it’s kinda awkward because I don’t sing.

44: Favourite piece of jewellery?
I don’t wear jewellery but necklaces are pretty.

45: Last sport you played?

46: Last song you sang?
Baby Shark

47: Favourite chat up line?
2 boys in my class each did their speech on pickup lines and I conclude that they all suck.

48: Have you ever used it?

49: Last time you hung out with anyone?
Um, I hung out with my siblings today.

50: Who should answer these questions next?
Anyone who a) reads this, and b) wants to, and oh yeah, you also must have a blog to answer the questions on.

So, that was the tag – you should do it.

The Dream Catchers – My WIP

I’ve been seeing posts around the blogosphere where bloggers explain and introduce their current WIP (Work In Progress). So today, I’ve decided to do exactly that. My comments will be in italics and snippets (from Chapters 1 or 2) will be in block quotes.

Title: The Dream Catchers (but it is subject to change)

She woke up crying, her head resting in a puddle of muddy tears that soaked the dry dirt. She was shivering from the roots of her rugged coal black hair to the tips of her leather-bound feet.

In a world centred around a mysterious black fog, a nameless girl holds unknown power. She sells dreams to the dreamcatchers for money to feed her tribe, but her only source of income could mean her demise. Although gruesome deaths occur, none compare to the horrors she finds in the fog, and the evils it conceals. She discovers who she is, and where she belongs, all while she puts her life on the line for those she loves and comes to love.

Sorry that that was so short, but I couldn’t really write much else about it.

And that cold, the cold he seemed to own; the cold that radiated off his figure as the sun radiates heat. But the sun is solid, the man wasn’t.

Character reference:

Her mother was Victory for the wars she had won against death.

There was nothing there. At least that’s what the laws of the universe told her.

Yeah, I really don’t know what to do now. Shall we go into some more short snippets?

Tendrils of darkness wrapped around him like strings on a puppet. The warmth was sucked from the air, replaced by a familiar cold that chilled Adaeze’s bones.

Standing on the tips of her toes, she could just reach the small, familiar nook in the trunk where she felt around until her fingers touched the metal of her pistol. She pulled it down along with a small case of bullets.

‘I did turn out to save your life, you’re meant to be thanking me, not scolding me for doing so.’

She had then known she couldn’t overcome it. So she had reclined into the pain, sending the message without words that she would not give in.

‘Perfection is only a curse of the imagination.’

Yeah, that was my WIP (I’m going to stop writing in italics now), I had no idea how to do this post so I just winged it. Thanks to everyone on WordPress with a ‘My WIP’ or ‘My Novel’ post for giving me the inspiration and guidelines to write this post.

10 Relatable kiwi feelings

AAAAAHHHH III’MMmm so sorry for missing not one but two (or three or four) of my posting days! Homework has me so bogged down often (and I’m only a year 9), so I’m finding it hard to make myself write when I just don’t have time. So I’m ditching my posting schedule and winging it.

Anyway, on (ummmmm)… Thursday last week at school, the house kapa haka groups performed in the annual inter-house kapa haka competition. I didn’t participate, but it was amazing.

For those of you that aren’t kiwis (New Zealanders), kapa haka is Māori song, dance and haka.

So, that gave me an idea for a post: relatable kiwi things/feelings. For example –

The feeling you get when you watch an amazing haka and it gives you the chills. At the end of all the performances, all the performers got on stage and performed the school haka and it was AMAZING!

The annoyance when people call kiwi fruit ‘kiwi’. I don’t know if this is just me but I get so annoyed when people (not from New Zealand) call kiwi fruit ‘kiwi’. No. Just no. Kiwi is a bird and a word to describe New Zealanders, kiwi fruit is a fruit.

Do people from other countries sit on tables? My social studies teacher was saying that in England, teachers will just sit on tables as they are teaching. WHAT! That is so wrong! He was saying that we don’t in New Zealand because it’s tapu – against our culture. So he’s implying that other countries sit on tables because it’s not against their cultures. I’m so confused. If you’re not a kiwi, tell me in the comments if you sit on tables.

When Slice Of Heaven comes on and everyone’s singing and it’s just a really good vibe.

Hey, I gotta lot of faith in ya…

It’s an anthem.

That pride when you see someone with a mullet. Mullets are a very NZ – Aussie thing, and there is such pride that comes with rocking one. If you didn’t know a mullet is:

Image result for is mullet hairstyle a new zealand thing

The pride when you hear about or see successful kiwi movies or people. Because we are only a country of 4.6 million, whenever someone or something for New Zealand is successful, the whole countries is so proud.

The rivalry with Aussie that according to Aussies DOESN’T EXIST! That’s right kiwis, I have spoken to our brothers the Aussies who have no idea about the sibling rivalry between us, and say it doesn’t exist. If you’re an Aussie and you’re reading this, comment if it does.

When someone starts singing Poi E. It’s a song that makes me so happy. It’s cultural and catchy and brings so many memories with it.

It’s even more of an anthem than Slice Of Heaven.

When someone starts performing a spontaneous heartfelt haka. For example, at Easter Camp (a Christian camp celebrating and exploring the story of Easter – their website), halfway through a speaker’s emotional talk, a man stood and started performing a passionate haka. Others (strangers) stood and performed it with him. I don’t even have words to describe how amazing and emotional and inspiring it was – I searched on thesaurus.com for so long trying to find words to fit but I couldn’t.

When a website says ‘free shipping’, but it’s only free shipping to 50 countries circling around either the US or England (most of the time), and you have to pay like 10 dollars to ship to New Zealand. The struggle is real.

Oh, and also New Zealand is missed off so many maps. Yes, New Zealand is a country. Deal with it.

So, that was some relateable kiwi feelings. Tell me in the comments if you could relate to any of them (looking at you – fellow kiwis).

How to procrastinate

Personally, I feel I’m good enough at procrastinating to teach (more like tell) you all how to do so. Therefore *drumroll please* I am doing exactly that.

Related image

Write a blog

I had to put this in as this is exactly what I am doing. Disclaimer: yes, I am well aware that the majority of people don’t have a blog to write on (isn’t that unfortunate), but I do recommend making one (if you have enough time to write on it).

Image result for procrastination gif

Go to the bathroom

Who’s going to stop you going to the toilet. Well, maybe a teacher (if you’re in class) but I’ve never been denied the right to go to the bathroom (for honest purposes – not procrastinating).

Do your homework

Okay, I know this technique doesn’t work if you’re trying to procrastinate from doing your homework, but it is helpful to not have to do other things (and you have to do your homework, so you can’t really be denied to do so.)

Do something that looks like homework

Namely writing or blogging (which I have already covered). But seriously, only do this if you’ve finished your homework, or there’s a massive chance that it won’t end up getting done. I speak from past experience.

Image result for writing gif

Help out

Make dinner, wash the dishes, hang out the washing. Do anything to help that doesn’t include whatever you don’t want to do. If you help out around the house/class/wherever you are, the everyone is much less likely to remember you have that task to do.

You need food, don’t you. Unless you eat annoyingly slow (then SOMEONE will get annoyed), you can waste quite a while just eating.

Watch youtube

As long as you have your headphones on, no-one will suspect a thing.

“What are you watching?”

Me *watching Jessie Paege*: “Just some stuff for science.” Genius.

Organise something

Organising makes you look like you are being productive. It is actually an AMAZING tool for procrastinating. Trust me. Just try it.

Have a shower

Or bath, it’s up to you. Not only is having a shower or bath super relaxing, it is perfect for procrastinating (and getting yourself clean).

See you on Wednesday for Part 2.

Blog Updates

Hello people, I just wanted to do a quick post to highlight the changes I have made and will be making to my blog.

So, without further ado:

Before, I used the theme Dara with an orange and dark grey palette, and a horrible header:

Now, I use the theme Shoreditch with a red and black palette (which I love), and…I made a new header (which I also love):

(Please tell me your opinions on my new design)

Bio widget/About page

I was scrolling through When Words Fly and discovered this post. Naturally, I tried it.

Before, my bio widget read:

Hi, I’m Hannah. I am a socially awkward 13 year from New Zealand. I love reading, writing (obviously), playing guitar and netball. Please show my blog some love (it definitely needs it).

Uhhhhhh, it sounds so cringey and self promoting.

So I changed it, following Abby’s advice for a good bio. It is now:

Hey, I’m Hannah, a self proclaimed word slinger, earnest bookworm and the ‘wordsmith’ behind this blog. (But mostly I’m just an awkward 13 year old.)

I love to write for you to read and enjoy (which I really hope you do!).

You can find me playing guitar, being REALLY loud or telling horrible jokes.

I still kept components from my old bio, but I completely changed most of it, and I love it!

I also made an about page by following this post. I love it so much more than my old one (a draft page that I never published on my blog).

My old one:

I am a socially awkward 13 year old from New Zealand.

As you can infer I do everything DIY, speak fully in slang and never wear shoes.

Well, if you inferred that then you are wrong. What stereotypical traits of kiwis, we don’t all do that.

In reality, I am a dog person with an obsession of books (especially Harry Potter).

I DO live on a farm, but I don’t really spend hours on it everyday. Sorry

Okay, I know that didn’t really tell you anything about me, so I hope this will do:

My name is Hannah Kerry Maria Ellwood. I turned 13 on Friday 13th April 2018. I live on a sheep and beef farm in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand.

I love reading, writing (obviously), guitar and photography, oh, and I play netball.

I hope enjoy reading my blog as much as I do writing it.

Thank you, Hannah

Aaaaannd my new one:

Hey, I’m Hannah and I kinda own this blog (but I don’t pay for it, so technically WordPress owns it). I am an awkward 13 year old from New Zealand.

I found my love for writing in 2015, and made my first blog in 2017. Sadly, that blog was a flop so I started up this one: Simplistic Internet Spasm. The name was inspired by a small glitch that I found on my friend’s blog.

This is my little corner of the internet, I hope you enjoy your stay as I sing and dance (very badly) through it while you watch.

I think it’s so cool. Thank you Abby.

(Comment your opinions on my bio and about page)

Posting days

I am not going to be just posting randomly anymore (yay?), I am going to post on Sundays and Wednesdays (New Zealand) and Fridays will be my day to post First Lines Fridays, tags and short update posts. I will post this today and start the schedule on Friday. I’ll see if that schedule works for me and then decide if I want to carry it on or change it. So stayed tuned.

Blog signoff

Just about every blog I have seen has some sort of signoff at the bottom of their posts, and I was missing out on the action. I mostly signoff my post with

And that’s really boring and unoriginal. So I made a signoff graphic/picture/whatever, but you will have to wait till the end of this post to see it.

Just kidding (did you think I was serious?), here it is:

Bottom of post logo

Yay! I love pretty signoffs!

I’ve had my blog for almost a month now and I kinda think/hope I have enough experience to do collabs without entirely ruining the other blog. Therefore, my blog is open to collabs and guest posts and stuff along those lines. I actually am really excited by the prospect of collabs so SOMEONE do something with me at least to fulfil my enthusiasm.

I know, it’s a small achievement but 10 FOLLOWERS! (+ 5 email followers) Thanks guys! My goal is 50 followers by the end of July.

Those were the changes to my blog (for now), thank you all!
